“The Hill” Closes Out Season

As the season comes to an end, unfavorable weather conditions would shorten the annual weekend on the hill to a single night of racing. With a packed house and one of the largest car counts of the season for Friday night’s events, fans were in for a full night of racing action, including the first appearance by the flat track karts.

Starting off the night were the JPR Auto & Tire mini wedges with a field of eleven. Heat race winners were Brooklyn Wilson in the Jr. Class and Reece “The Beast” Bollinger in the Sr. Class. With the green out for the Jr. Class, it was Wilson who would jump out front early with Hutchinson a close second. After a restart, Wilson would look to take the inside line, however, Hutchinson was already there. The two would go down the back stretch side by side with Hutchinson ultimately taking the lead off of turn four. “The Dirt Devil” would fend off Wilson’s charge to pick up another win on the season followed by Timmy Glassburn, Jason Wright, Kaylana Hare. In the Sr. Class, it was Bollinger bringing the field to the start. However, troubles as he would fall back through the field. Meanwhile, Karyssa Beagle would overtake Stafford to take the lead on lap one and that is where she would remain fending off competitors to pick up the feature win. Beagle was followed by Donnie Danley, Zoe Stafford, Reece Bollinger and Kyla Dillon.

Running for the first time on the season, the flat karts had a field of eleven. With two heats, winners were Landon Wetzel and Daryl Conkle. Bringing the field to the green was Wetzel, who would jump out to an early lead. As the top five singled out, Brandon Gardner would make a pass to take second with six laps in. Nevertheless, remaining out front, leading lap for lap and picking up the feature win was Landon Wetzel. Brandon Gardner was second followed by Daryl Conkle, Jack Lamborn, Coty Conway.

There was a full field of thirty Holmes Tire late models with “Hammer Down” Doug Drown setting fast time with a 13.755. Heat race winners were Vic Hottinger, Kyle Moore and Stephen Prince with “The Flying Ace” Corey Conley claiming the dash win. The last chance win went to Michael Davis.

Coming to the green, it was “The Flying Ace” setting the pace and taking the top spot. Meanwhile, JR Gentry and Doug Drown would both go to work on “Flyin” Ryan Markham on the low side ultimately passing to claim second and third. With Gentry challenging, working his bumper, Conley would attempt to retain his position, doing so as the caution would fly with only eight laps in the books.

Back under green, Conley would once again claim the top spot. With seventeen laps down, the leader began negotiating lap traffic as Drown used the high side to try to reel in second of JR Gentry, however, unable to do so. Nevertheless, after leading green to checker, picking up yet another win at the Hill this season it was “The Flying Ace” Corey Conley. Rounding out the top five was JR Gentry, Doug Drown, Ryan Markham and Vic Hottinger.

The John’s Custom Embroidery & Screen Printing modified division had a field of twenty-one. Setting fast time, as one of the last cars to qualify, was “The Logger” Kevin Morehouse with a 15.217. Casey Fritz and Rex Slaughter each picked up a heat race win with Kyle Brown claiming the dash win.

Bringing the field down the backstretch, Kyle Brown would take the top spot as the green dropped. However, Brown would soon be challenged by “The Logger” Kevin Morehouse who would take to the high side of Brown. Side by side down the backstretch, Morehouse would ultimately claim the lead off of turn four with a mere six laps in the books. Lap for lap, “The Logger” would begin working his way through lap traffic, advancing his lead as the battle for second between Brown and DJ Cline heated up. Thus, unable to be surpassed, picking up another win on the season was “The Logger” Kevin Morehouse. With the victor in the books, stake on second was up for grabs as Brown and Cline battled, side by side off of turn four to the checker with Kyle Brown edging out over Cline. Finishing fourth was Jimmy Smith with Casey Fritz finishing fifth.

Rolling onto the track next were the Holmes Pest Control Street Stocks with a field of nineteen. Picking up the dash win as well as fast time was Kyle Moore, in the Lonas owned #11A, with a time of 16.553. Heat race wins went to Bob Chilcote and Kevin Potts.

With the feature line up set, the green was out and it was Kyle Moore taking the early lead. A close second, looking to the inside, was Bob Daugherty challenging the bumper of Moore. However, trouble, as Daugherty would make contact with the tire in turn four with only three laps in the book causing him to fall back positions, ultimately taking it pitside. Moreover, front runner Brandon Gardner would also have troubles ending his night early. Once again under green, Moore would retain the top spot as John Wilson worked the bumper looking to claim the win. Nevertheless, able to fend off Wilson while leading lap for lap it was Kyle Moore picking up the win followed by Wilson, Gary Hensel, David Potts and Bob Chilcote.

The Rigz Towing modlites also made an appearance this weekend with a 9-car field. A single heat race win went to Ray Leslie, placing him on the pole of their 12-lap feature. With the green out, Leslie would take the top spot, however short lived as Joey Anderson would pass and take the lead as troubles for Leslie would drop him out of the top five. Meanwhile, working their way up from their fifth and seventh place starting positions, to do battle for second was Tanner McLoughlin and Clint Snyder. As Snyder used the low side to pass for second, McLoughlin would return the favor and regain his position. Nevertheless, getting out front and never looking back was the #10 of Joey Anderson, adding another win on his season. Anderson was followed by Tanner McLoughlin, Clint Snyder, Rory Reed and Levi Lease.

The Bugs-R-Gone trucks had their largest count of the season with thirteen. Heat race winners were Travis Winterringer and Cole Lillibridge, setting them on the front row for the night’s feature event. As they approached the green, the battle was on between Winterringer and Lillibridge for the top spot. However, contact between the two would ultimately bring out the caution forcing Winterringer to restart tail and ending the night early for Lillibridge. Back under green, it was the youngster of the division, “The Dominator” Braxton Wilson who would take the top spot. Fending off challenges by Jerry Gardner as the two worked through lap traffic, Wilson would retain the top spot and go on to end his 2016 season with a win. Finishing second was Jerry Gardner, third Travis Hare, fourth John Large and fifth Dwayne Powell.

The Short Track Fire and Rescue mini stock division had full field of cars with twenty-seven set to do battle. Heat race winners were Mike Barr, Gary Hensel, Tony Mullinnex and Jordan James. Rounding out night’s features, picking up his first win on the season it was Jordan James followed by Mike Barr, Gary Hensel, Jerry Adkins and season points champion Colton St. John.
